Help Yourself — Watch What You Buy

1.  Watch out for High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Eating less foods with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in them:

  • Will help send this message to Congress
  • Will help send this message to farmers
  • May help you and your family be healthier

Unfortunately, it can be very difficult and expensive to remove it entirely from your diet in the US.   However, in order to help you make an informed decision, we rank each of our suggestions according to the price difference between those products with and without HFCS (unfortunately we only do that for the name brands).

No Price Differences

Products like Ketchup, Peanut Butter, and Pasta Sauce you can get without HFCS if you look for it.   In most cases with little or no price difference (20 cents or less).

Also look for HFCS in the following products…

  • …when buying Soda
  • …when buying Breads and other baked products
  • …when buying Cereals
  • …when buying Pasta Sauce
  • …when buying Pickles
  • …when buying Juices
  • …when buying Jams and Jellies
  • many other foods also contain HFCS, so check other foods as well

2.  Watch out for Dairy Products & Beef from Corn-Fed Cows

Why? – Cows naturally eat grass.  Some farmers in the US feed cows corn because it is cheaper.  To help them digest it they are given antibiotics and other hormones.  Basically, corn makes the cows less healthy.

What can I do? – Buy organic dairy products like milk, cheese, and butter.  Bur organic steak and beef products.  Look for the USDA Organic Logo as they are from cows who eat grass.

    High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, corn sugar, whatever you call it is an artifical manufactured substance from likely GM (genetically modified) corn grown with excessive fertilizers, excessive cultivation, excessive pesticides, insane subsidies. Classic case of “Food Inc.” taking over Congress, FDA, and the U.S. consumer.

    Now we’re not big on sugars but do use evaporated cane sugar or honey where appropriate. Oh, organic Maple Sugar on pancakes (this is New Hampshire, after all).

    We eat plant foods (and some fish) see “The China Study” by Cornell prof T. Colin Campbell available in bookstores, Amazon, etc. The gist is the “diseases of affluence” cardio, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, cancer, alzheimers, … are a direct result of the “diet of affluence”. Fit, healthy, in our 70’s, my wife still triathlons (my knees don’t run much they will bicycle).
